Obsolescence? What Obsolescence?

One of the more common challenges DfR helps resolve is dealing with obsolete parts (which, of course, drives counterfeits). However, this insightful graph from EDN turns common sense on its head. Three out of the top four integrated circuit (IC) technologies are 130nm, 180nm, and 500nm and volumes are expected to be relatively steady for most IC technologies. Can we finally expect our parts to be around for more than 3 years? For more information on obsolescence mitigation, please contact Walt Tomczykowski wtomczykowski@dfrsolutions.com.

Counterfeit watchdog! DfR Presentation at iMAPS 2010 Raleigh on Nov 2.

DoD watchdogs are stating that the military is wide open for intrusion by counterfeit parts. Crackdowns are occurring, but the boldness of counterfeiters is increasing. DfR has a complete understanding of how we can help you with this dilemma. Greg Caswell, gcaswell@dfrsolutions.com, will be presenting a paper entitled "Counterfeit Detection Strategies-When to Do It/How to Do It" at the IMAPS Symposium on November 2. In addition, a new and unique methodology, "Using DNA to Safeguard Electronic Components," for obviating counterfeit parts will be presented by Janice Meraglia, janice.meraglia@adnas.com, from Applied DNA Sciences.

Counterfeit Components - Understanding the Risk/Reward Tradeoff

Counterfeiting is increasingly a challenge to electronic OEMs. As even the military are finding themselves vulnerable, the electronics industry is developing initiatives and standards to combat this issue. The most important step is quantifying the risk/reward tradeoffs: What to do, when to do it, and is it worth the money? For more information on DfR's counterfeit detection and prevention services, including compliance to Honeywell's SPOC 419 requirements, please contact Ed Dodd, edodd@dfrsolutions.com.

Counterfeit Prevention and Detection Techniques

Once a strategic approach is defined, the next step is to identify the appropriate mitigation techniques. While a good first step is to use authorized distributors, business situations sometimes prevent this. This white paper provides the framework for a viable testing program by identifying and detailing useful equipment and test methodologies. Counterfeit Prevention and Detection Strategy

One of the limitations of the current conversation on counterfeits is the failure to identify a systematic approach to risk mitigation. By incorporating the probability of counterfeit exposure, the purchase volumes, and the cost of failure, this strategic tool can be used to identify the detection and avoidance techniques that provide the greatest return on investment.
